Contentedness Versus Complacency

I've been struggling to reconcile two seemingly opposing philosophies, both of which I found some wisdom in. The first encouraging personal development, long term goal setting, and striving for excellence in whatever I do. The second arguing that by being content I can live a happier, less stressful life. How can I be content and strive for excellence at the same time? How can I be content, without being complacent or apathetic? It occurred to me today during a rare moment of quiet reflexion that perhaps contentedness is a measure of how we perceive events in the here-and-now, "looking on the bright side of things" to use the vernacular. Complacency (or perhaps more accurately, apathy) on the other hand is the long term lack of action. I can set long term attainable goals consistent with my drive for excellence and continual improvement while still getting satisfaction out of what I have accomplished to date. I can enjoy what I have without forsaking goals to acquire something better.
