I SO hear you. We saw this problem too. Schools were our top priority. Our mediocre solution was that we found a very "builder's grade" home so that we weren't paying for any extras we didn't like. This allows us to customize to our own quality tastes to some degree. Over time we intend to upgrade, but it sure takes a LONG time in both $ and free time.
On the flip side, my sis is building a home here in the area. The contractors they have brought in are very critical of her attempts to customize. It's a very small space but that doesn't mean it can't have thoughtful details!!! UGH.

We would love to build our own. Unfortunately, this tends to conflict with our location preferences. Around here it is very difficult to find land to build on that has good schools and provides any sort of neighbourhood feel. We've looked at builder lots and "scrapers" alike, but either the costs get too high or we end up with unacceptably diversified housing. We're still looking, but while the kids are in school, I don't have high hopes of this working for us.

There is only one way to balance those three categories - build it yourself. Anyone who puts the kind of work and care you have put into your deck is prime for building a house. (Note: a large proportion of house-building is far easier than finish woodwork!) Not that I would advocate homebuilding to anyone - it is insane. But in our case it was slightly less insane than coping with other people's notions of quality, design, location, etc.

I've considered relocating, but my options are limited with Intel. Folsom is an option, but I didn't fall in love with the place on my last trip (I didn't spend much time there growing up in Citrus Heights). Chandler doesn't interest me much.

You should check out our neighborhood. We have plenty of new Craftsman style homes about 4000-5000 sq ft, very family friendly, lots of parks, a reservoir with a beach, your pick of schools. The market is great too - about $150-200k less than when we bought our home! Just one small thing - you'd have to relocate :)

Not a bad idea. My username and hostnames are usually quite short (at least in comparison to the offensively long pathnames I find myself working with these days). Still, I might give that a try.

Personally, I omit the user@host unless remote [ -n "$SSH_CONNECTION" ] or unusual [ "$USER" != "josh" ]. That shortens my prompt significantly (it starts out as just ~$) and removes visual noise, and makes it much more obvious when the username or hostname matters.

I'd happily pay $300+ more for a 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 screen.

Totally agree Darren.

If it hasn't got 1050 (or preferably 1200) vertical pixels it's useless to me.

Currently work on a 17" Macbook Pro (1920x1200), but would also like a nice slim, powerful ish PC laptop with a high res screen. I have a soft spot for IBM/Lenovo after owning 4 in the past before the Mac, so would love this except for the crappy screen.

It needs 1440x1050 or so. The bezel is far too thick too and spoils it, so should have a ~14" panel.

Fedora!?! I thought for sure you would go back to Debian. All my machines are still on 10.04 or 10.10, I've kind of been avoiding Unity. I have too many Redhat/Mandrake/Mandriva/urpmi/yum scars to try Fedora. Good luck with that.
